Canal du Midi
The Canal du Midi is a very exceptional construction, built in the 17th century by Pierre-Paul Riquet. Between 1777 and 1798 the canal was rerouted by actions of Carcassonne and since 1996 it is listed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

It has taken over 300 years for this gigantic structure to be realised, of which the dimension only really can be understood when one has seen everything, such as the Cammazes, the dam of Saint-Ferréol and the lock at Fonsérannes. The canal was a ingenuity back then an even today it still is amazing. De harbour was openend officially on May 31 1810, simultaneously with the altered route of the canal through the city.
